Sea Scouts are the Nautical Division of the Boy Scouts of America. We are only two years younger than the B.S.A.. Sea Scouts are Co-Ed, High-adventure for youth 14-21 years of age, High School thru College and are part of the Venturing Program. We teach maritime and leadership skills that are easily transferred into adult life. We are inviting Sea Scouts & Venturing Crews from Simon Kenton and Dan Beard Councils, Central Region Area 6 & Area 4 and other Boy Scouts 14-18 to join us for “Sail Camp”

This is our fifth year hosting "Sail Camp" however it is the first year where we opened it up to the entire region.

In 2014 we have scheduled a week (07/27 thru 08/02/2014) of Sailing, Kayaking, Canoeing, Powerboating, Swimming and Camping at Rocky Fork State Park and Campgrounds. This is located just east of Cincinnati Ohio on US-50, just past the town of Hillsboro. This is a man made lake with 2080 acres and is @ 7 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. The lake is just prior to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and very gentle rolling hills. With a West-East trajectory insuring a very constant supply of wind and ensuring your deck crew ample time to develop correct tacking and jibing techniques in addition to your helmsman. The State Park has an excellent “Class A” camping facility, at the Dovetail Group Activity Area that will accommodate 150 Scouts (we expect scouts from seven states to be attending). It has a very large shelter house for eating, watching movies on a large screen and has a indoor kitchen. There are two large public beaches, boat docks located in three main areas in the lake with @ 150 sailboats & powerboats at each location (these are not ours to use).

We are planning a prolonged Sail Camp with assistance from Cincinnati Sail & Power Squadron, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Rocky Fork Sailing Association, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Strictly Sail, Rocky Fork Park Rangers, Hillsboro Fire Department and Boone County Water Rescue. They will be there to demonstrate Safety at Sea, First Aid and other nautical skills necessary to go boating correctly. ODNR will have two days of kayaking training. You will experience group events on the Field, and on the Water, to be Safe at Sea. Advancement requirements will be taught from Apprentice, Ordinary, Able and Quartermaster.

This will be a B.S.A. FIRST we will be doing the MAX with a minimum expense by utilizing Local experts, volunteers and allowing each Sea Scout Ship the opportunity to contribute to this event’s success (if you can) by bringing some of the gear needed to make this happen (some small boats, kayaks, canoes etc..) in addition to your own camping gear. Each Ship, Crew or Troop will be using the “patrol method” for most meals. We will supply 1 group dinner (Pig Roast) and a Class “B” uniform Shirts for each participant. The cost per Scout will be $90.00 (each Ship, Crew or Troop will be supplying their own tents, food & responsible for their own cooking). We will be supplying the campgrounds, boats, all of the instructors, class “B” uniform shirt, Friday night group Dinner with all of the trimmings, huge shelter house for eating & socializing, a large indoor kitchen & outdoor cooking areas.   Due to the tremendous amount of energy and resources being donated this will cost less than if your group came up to this lake and just camped here.

Ship 717 will supply @ 35 vessels from 2 Sailing Cruisers, Snipe 15, Rebel 16, Capri 14, 4 Hobie Cat’s, 2 Sunfish & 2 Lasers, to Kayaks & Canoes, to help augment the boats each Sea Scout Ship is asked to bring as many boats as they can. Rocky Fork Sailing Association will have additional large sailboats & Captains able to augment our fleet of boats.

Due date is April 15th, 2014, cost is $90.00/person. After April 15 until May 1st cost is $100/person. After May 1 please contact us for availability (provide contact name/ phone number).  None of the moneys are going to be used for the use of the boats, gas etc. The use of these boats is being donated to the B.S.A for this week, and no funds or other forms of reimbursement will go to the owners of these vessels.
